Given the fact a kids playhouse is designed for encouraging fun and playfulness, it can also be used to show case a child’s cultural roots.   One of the best things about a playhouse is for a child to make it their own. Whether they do it by adding their toys to the space or by laying out their favorite blanket in the loft, parents want to know that their child is comfortable and feels responsible for the structure.   A way that children can do this is by expressing their heritage. Here’s how:

1. Encourage and inspire your kids to design and create a mural based on their cultural heritage. Consider allowing your child to use the outer or inside kids playhouse walls as a blank canvas.   Flags from each country in the child’s geneology, historical figures, significant artifacts, or specific characters from folklore stories could be used to create a painted cultural mural.

2. Create curtains for the playhouse from fabric reflecting your child’s cultural heritage. Specific regions of the world have very identifiable colors, textures, patterns or designs associated with their culture.  Floral patterns on the clothing of women in Latin cultures, for example, tell of a family’s region of origin.

3.   A muscial library can be developed by a child, with help from their parents, that will give the child many hours of joy listening to music that they had a hand in picking out. A musical library representing specific cultures can be fun to assemble with your child. It’s easy to find cultural music online or at a library. Use software or an mp3 player with speakers when preparing the cultural music library.

Children that make their kids playhouse a major part of their lives will cherish the opportunity to give it a really rich cultural feel. Parents should encourage this type of exploration and pride. As your child plays in their playhouse, they may start to inquire and play games from your family’s homeland. As your child becomes more familiar with their family’s heritage, in years to come, your child will be able to pass along these important cultural traditions to their own family.
