One of the most memorable days of your life and a particularly important milestone in any relationship will be your wedding day. For some people it may seem like just another birthday if they have been through a number of marriages, but for most it is something to savor, something that you have been building up to in your relationship and something that you want to be able to remember in the best possible way for as long as you can. Unfortunately, your memory can only hold so much information and much of which gets lost over time, this is why so many people choose to hire wedding photographers to keep that memory alive.

Even though people choose to get engaged far in advance of their prospective wedding date, and give themselves more than enough time to plan for the occasion, the whole process of organizing everything is still one of the most stressful periods of anyone’s life. Unfortunately, even something as ostensibly simple as choosing the style of photography can add to that stress as there are a few very different styles to choose from. To make your life slightly easier at this time, the information detailed below explains the four most popular styles you can choose, so when you go to speak to potential photographers, you at least have some knowledge beforehand.

Probably the most common photography style today is the traditional style. With traditional wedding photography, the photographer is in control of everything. He or she has a set routine and sometimes defines the order of certain events so that the picture they want to achieve can be possible when they feel it is right. Although this kind of photography results in great photos, it can seem a little old-fashioned and artificial compared to other styles.

Another very popular style of photography is the photojournalistic style. This particular style is characterized by almost no interference from the photographer as he/she attempts to gain images of the event without any control or guidance. This style can be more surprising than other styles and will present a more candid recount of the day.

The last two styles are contemporary or fashion based photography and studio based. The contemporary or fashion based approach is more of a combination of photojournalistic and traditional styles but with a modern twist, with innovative and dramatic post-processing of pictures. The studio based photography style is very popular in Asia where couples will book time in a wedding studio or at a location with a make-up artist and hair stylist, and will go through a number of clothes whilst trying to get the perfect ‘glamour wedding shots’.

When most couples plan their wedding day they take a lot of things into consideration. They coordinate the date according to vacation times from work. Or they coordinate the wedding day for the family to be able to make it into town.  Or they plan it based upon maybe available venues, like the church or the restaurant.

But one of the biggest things couples fail to plan for is the photographer.  This is no small matter.  And I am not just saying it because I am a wedding photographer. 

No planning the wedding day with the wedding photographer in mind could mean all the difference in the world. Especially when you consider the pictures are what is going to be captured for a lifetime.

So what are the key factors to consider when planning with the photographer in mind.  The time and the date.

Let’s begin talking about time.  How many couples would want their photographer rushing through the photo shoot?  I am pretty sure most people will not raise their hand to that. 

Without even considering your photographer, a majority of the times most couples do just that. The couple or family basically rush the photographer to try and take all the pictures. 

How so you say?  Well a lot of times, the couple will schedule the ceremony for let’s say 1-2 pm.  With the reception starting at 2:30. How many photos can the photographer really take with only half an hour to work with?  Not many.

Worse thing to consider, what if he does manage to take all the photos? Do you think they can take some real good shots if they are being rushed?  Of course not.

So plan the times for the wedding and the reception with enough space in between to take all the photos.

Second thing to consider when planning with the photographer in mind is your photographer’s availability.

Most probably don’t realize this, but most good photographers will be booked months in advance. If you do deal with a large photo company, they very well could have several photographers on staff.

Well planning your wedding without considering your photographer’s availability could turn into a nightmare. Because when you reserve that special day, without making sure your photographer is available, come wedding day you might get a shock when you find somebody totally different.

This happens more than you can imagine when dealing with a big photography company.  You might not realize they have plenty of photographers on staff, and if the photographer you fell in love with is booked, unless you specifically ask, the company might not tell you.  When your wedding day comes, they might just outsource their work or a second rate photographer might show up.

Be prepared that you don’t let something like this happen.Making plans for your wedding day is special. Make sure that your plan has the wedding photographer in mind as well.

Being asked to take photos for a wedding is a huge responsibility.If you’ve been approached to do it as a friend, or maybe asked to do it as a professional, here are 5 great tips to do the job right.

This tips are coming from first hand experience as a San Diego wedding photographer.You could be a seasoned pro, or you could be an amateur, but by following these tips, you will do the job smoothly without second guessing yourself.You will be ready for whatever may happen.

Our first tip is pretty simple and that is to have the couple and their families make a list for you of shots they want to take.When you know the day will be hectic and chaotic, doing this will help you get the family and group shots later on in the day more smoothly.  You will love it and when you can just go down the list and get everything without leaving anything out by accident.

The second tip on our list is to not delete any shots.  In this day and age of digital cameras, most photographers use them.Even though they are great, it is also tempting since it is so easy, to delete a shot.Don’t even think of looking at the shots.  What makes a great shot in your mind could differ widely that what makes a great shot in the couples minds.  And who knows, they might appreciate the so called un “professional” shots.

A third tip to consider is making sure you get candid shots.A good photographer isn’t one who just takes the standard basic shots, like family shots, typical wedding shots, or whatever is the usual.  But they will also try and capture the emotions of the day through the shots of all the people that were there.It may include the things that go wrong also, like a flower girl making a wrong turn or the ring bearer not wanting to walk down the aisle.  Every shot counts.

The fourth piece of advice is make sure you have back up equipment.Do you even want to think of the horror of not being able to take any more shots of the wedding because of a broken camera.Be prepared for anything that can go wrong.  Being prepared will help you avoid that uncomfortable moment of not having a working camera to capture the rest of the day.

Lastly, make sure to practice for your lighting. There can be a huge difference between the lighting inside the wedding and outside, so make sure to practice for all the different possible conditions. Think about seeing if you can go to the locations of the big day and look for the best spots to take pictures as well as study the lighting needs.

Taking these 5 tips into account will help you immensely.  It will prepare you for whatever might go wrong, it will prepare you for capturing what goes right, and it will prepare you to help contribute to this wonderful day by being the best photographer you can be.  Take it from my years of experience as a San Diego photographer.
